Synopsis

Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime).

Transporting audiences from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, shares the story of Horton the elephant. Throughout the remarkable tale Horton discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including  the Who child Jojo, who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton's challenge is twofold – not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that's been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant!  Fun and engaging, Seussical KIDS has a large variety of roles for performers of every type.

Character Descriptions

JoJo: The audience’s link to the story, Jojo helps us enjoy the wonder and mystery of the tale through his eyes. The "smallest of small" Who, Jojo is guided by the Cats and befriended by Horton. Strong singing and acting skills are required for this role.

Vocal range: B3-Db5

The Cats: Mischievous, spirited creatures who take JoJo and the audience on quite an adventure. The Cats act as the narrators and have the fun task of taking on various roles throughout the show. Bold acting skills, solid singing, and good movement skills are desire for these roles.

Vocal range: Bb3-D5

Horton: A loveable elephant with a heart of gold, Horton firmly believes a person's a person, no matter how small.  Horton's heart is big enough to embrace everyone in the world of Dr. Seuss and his loyalty knows no bounds. Strong singing and acting skills are required for this role.

Vocal range: Ab3-E5

Mr. Mayor: The mayor of Whoville and the perfect picture of patriarchy. Mr. Mayor tries to keep the town happy and secure, which is quite a job since the tiny Whos are always in danger of being swept away and lost. A sense of maturity and authority are necessary for this role, with a moderate amount of singing.

Mrs. Mayor: The mayor’s wife is most concerned with trying to make sure her son, JoJo, stays in line. The picture of maternal concern, Mrs. Mayor requires a mature presence and solid singing skills.

Gertrude McFuzz: is a bird with tail envy! However, despite her insecurities Gertrude manages to be a huge support to Horton and his number one fan. Sweet but feisty, this role requires strong acting and solid singing skills.

Vocal range: G3-C5

Mayzie LaBird: A sneaky bird who tricks Horton into helping her take care of her egg. Mayzie is the embodiment of a free spirited party bird. A bold presence and bright energy is desired for this role.

Vocal range: Bb3-D4

Sour Kangaroo: A kangaroo who is sour as can be. With a lot of attitude and a strong sense of justice, the Sour Kangaroo wants nothing more than for everyone to follow the rules. A strong voice and bold presence is required for this role.

Vocal range: C4-Db5

Young Kangaroo: The Sour Kangaroo's child, the Young Kangaroo is a tiny version of it's mother. Also a strict follower of the rules, the Young Kangaroo should have a lot of sass.

The Wickersham Brothers: A trio of trouble-making monkeys! Mischievous and wild, the Wickershams live to create chaos. Strong rhythm and a bold presence are desired for these roles.

Vocal range: A3-E4

Judge Yertle: The voice of justice, Yertle the Turtle presides over Horton’s court proceedings. A fun cameo role, a strong speaking voice is desired.

Vlad Vladikoff: An eagle who drops Whoville into a field of clovers! A great sense of comedy and strong acting choices are desired for this fun cameo role.

Teen Acting Camp

*NEW THIS YEAR*

Do you have a teen who wants to delve deeper into the world of acting? Then this camp is a perfect fit!

This one-week camp teaches acting basics, develops relationships onstage, and will introduce a

tried-and-true approach to script analysis.

The campers' hard work will culminate in a demo-performance for friends and family.

MORE DETAILS

The 2019 Teen Acting Camp is for performers ages 12-18.  Together we will cover such topics as projection, physical acting, making bold choices, how to analyze a character/script, stage presence, improv, and developing & communicating relationships on stage. Campers will be given not only tools to become a better performer, but also skills that teach work ethic and inspire imagination, community, confidence, and passion.

  • Campers will receive a curriculum packet that they will use to learn how to analyze & develop a role and bring it to life on stage. Our curriculum is primarily based on the Stanislavsky system of acting and Viewpoints, but we will also incorporate improvisational skills, traditional stock character types, and will touch on many other methods and approaches to acting.

  • We will hold auditions on the first day of camp for our demo-performance, which will be comprised of scene studies and possibly short plays.* Campers will spend the week applying all they learn to their assigned scripts.

  • ALL Campers will be assigned roles and rehearse, memorize, and develop these roles throughout the week. They will then perform for friends and family on Friday, August 23rd to demonstrate all they have learned.

  • We guarantee tons of fun and ample stage time for all campers, as well as the intensity and challenge craved by teenage performers. It is our goal to send every camper away with fantastic tools they can continue to use!
